Following the board of governors' recent meeting in Las Vegas, Silver addressed reporters, emphasizing that no predetermined decisions are on the horizon. "We're going to be as thorough as possible and look at all the potential issues," he stated, hinting at a meticulous analysis ahead.

Cities like Seattle and Las Vegas are potential hotspots for new franchises, yet Silver revealed that despite Seattle being a leading candidate for relocation or expansion, there isn't an overwhelming push among team owners to grow beyond the current 30 teams.

To navigate this complex process, two dedicated subcommittees—the advisory finance committee and the audit and strategy committee—will helm the exploration of expansion strategies. While no official polling was conducted during the meetings, Silver noted a palpable sense of curiosity from the governors regarding potential future directions.

"A consensus quickly formed that the league office should take the lead on this project," Silver remarked, indicating strong support for a systematic investigation.

Silver expressed optimism about the progress made so far, labeling this week’s discussions as a "significant step." Still, he cautioned that there’s much more to tackle before any formal expansion plans can be launched.

"We're engaging in an in-depth analysis—something we weren't prepared to undertake before. It’s truly day one of this exploratory phase. Regarding pricing and timelines, it’s too soon to tell," Silver concluded, portraying the intricacies of NBA expansion as a multifaceted challenge that demands careful consideration.
