What comes to mind when you hear the words 'Hong Kong'? For me, it's simply home sweet home!
Reflecting on my first encounter with Hong Kong in 1989 brings back vivid memories, especially the thrill of landing at the infamous Kai Tak Airport. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the airport was renowned for its hair-raising approach, plunging the plane between towering skyscrapers. The heart raced as if we might crash right into the bustling city below. Once on solid ground, the vibrant energy of Hong Kong took hold, and that adrenaline rush remains with me to this day. There’s something truly invigorating about this city—its energy is my daily tonic.
In regard to place, I feel most at home wandering through the busy streets of Hong Kong, where the essence of Asia thrives. The rich blend of cultures saturates every corner, creating a tapestry of experiences that keep me grounded.
So, what truly defines a Hong Konger? There’s a humorous take: many spend more time at the airport than in the city itself. Yet, at its core, a true Hong Konger possesses an unyielding community spirit and a profound appreciation for the intricacies that make this city exceptional.
If I were to pinpoint one individual who encapsulates the spirit of Hong Kong, it would undoubtedly be Bruce Lee. His unparalleled global influence and cultural legacy embody the determination and innovative spirit that resonates deeply within the city.
If you're looking for a captivating experience at The Upper House, prepare to be treated like royalty! The service is nothing short of extraordinary, and the breathtaking views from Salisterra and The Green Room offer a perfect vantage point of Hong Kong’s skyline. It’s an ideal place for a luxurious staycation!
When wandering around Pacific Place, you might be surprised to discover the serene oasis of Hong Kong Park, just a couple of minutes up the escalators. Amidst the bustling concrete jungle, this tranquil park provides a refreshing escape.
On weekends, my go-to breakfast spot is Salisterra at The Upper House, our cherished Sunday ritual. Whether craving Chinese, Japanese, or Western breakfasts, their croissants are truly the best in town—a must-try!
If I could host a dream dinner party, my ideal guests would be those with a fearless voice, ready to engage in meaningful dialogue. I cherish lively evenings filled with robust conversations and laughter shared with friends.
Dining out in Hong Kong is an adventure in itself, given the myriad options available. Salisterra serves a superb Salt-Baked Sea Bass, enhanced with a dash of Pernod that brings forth the essence of Provence. For authentic Chinese cuisine, Madame Fu is a must-visit for its mouthwatering Peking duck and the nostalgia of old Hong Kong—dining here is a delight, as this city truly is a culinary paradise.
Art also reflects the spirit of Hong Kong. Mak2's art series 'Home Sweet Home' captures the complexity of life in this city, inspired by her experiences playing The Sims. Through her work, she dives into how layers of unreality shape our collective perception of Hong Kong.
Among the wild tales from the streets of Hong Kong, one of the craziest was spotting a taxi cab adorned with two entire rows of buzzing cell phones on the dashboard. What was the driver up to? To this day, I remain curious about that mystery!
There are unique experiences that can only be found in Hong Kong. One unforgettable adventure is hiking through lush tropical flora right in the city. For those seeking a scenic trek, the trail from the Peak Fire Station to Wan Chai, which navigates past the Police Museum, offers stunning views. And no visit is complete without savoring traditional Hong Kong milk tea or enjoying a spectacular night ride across the harbor on the Star Ferry.
What do I miss most when I'm away from this vibrant city? The sense of safety that envelops you everywhere you go. Hong Kong is undoubtedly one of the safest places I have ever known.
For anyone planning a trip to Hong Kong, my advice is simple: explore on foot! Embrace the city's energy and get lost in its streets. Ride the tramways and take a ferry—immerse yourself in the true spirit of Hong Kong. It’s a journey you won't regret!
