MAPUTO, Mozambique — Mozambique has descended into chaos following the controversial ruling from the country's highest court, which confirmed Frelimo party candidate Daniel Chapo as the victor in the disputed October 9 elections. The aftermath has been tragic, with reports indicating at least 21 fatalities, among them two police officers, as violence erupted across the nation.
Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda addressed the press in Maputo, revealing that the unrest was primarily instigated by supporters of the runner-up candidate, Venancio Mondlane, who garnered only 24% of the vote compared to Chapo's 65%. Ronda described the shocking level of violence, noting that in just 24 hours following the court’s decision, a staggering 236 violent incidents were logged nationwide, leaving a serious toll on both civilians and law enforcement.
The violence included widespread looting, vandalism, and the destruction of property, with 25 vehicles set ablaze, including two belonging to the police force. Disturbingly, a penitentiary was reported to have been attacked, resulting in the release of 86 inmates amidst the chaos.
Tensions had been simmering prior to the Constitutional Council's announcement, and violent protests broke out immediately thereafter. Social media has been flooded with alarming footage showing angry demonstrators burning shops and clashing with police in cities like Maputo and Beira.
Mondlane has since called for a nationwide “shutdown” beginning Friday, further heightening fears of ongoing unrest in a country already fraught with tension. Mozambique, home to approximately 34 million residents, has been on edge since the elections, and the frustrations among Mondlane's predominantly young supporters have led to confrontations with security forces, sometimes escalating to gunfire.
The recent violence is just the latest chapter in a tumultuous post-election period, where over 150 lives have reportedly been lost to unrest triggered by the election results. The government faces immense pressure to restore order and address the grievances of a populace that feels disenfranchised and ignored in the political process.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this electoral crisis, the world watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation and the impact on Mozambique’s path towards democratic stability.
