In a bold step towards global expansion, Miura & Partners is launching its inaugural office in Greater China this summer, setting roots in the vibrant city of Hong Kong. This strategic move aims to capitalize on investment opportunities not only between Japan and Hong Kong but also with mainland China and Taiwan, positioning the firm as a key player in Asia's dynamic legal landscape.

When prompted by the Asia Business Law Journal on the choice of Hong Kong over other major hubs in the region, such as Beijing and Shanghai, Ryota Miura, founding partner of Miura & Partners, highlighted Hong Kong's status as a pivotal business center in Asia. "Hong Kong serves as a crucial gateway for investments flowing to and from the Greater China region and Japan," Miura explained, underscoring the city's integral role in the firm’s strategic vision.

The primary focus of the new office will be on a variety of legal services, including the structuring and implementation of investment funds for offshore operations, as well as facilitating cross-border transactions essential for both inbound and outbound activities between Japan and Greater China. Additionally, the office will handle dispute resolution to ensure comprehensive legal support for clients navigating complex international markets.

A significant factor behind the decision to establish a direct office in Hong Kong, rather than forming an alliance with a local law firm, was the recent acquisition of partner Junko Shiokawa. With a wealth of experience in the Hong Kong legal landscape, Shiokawa brings exceptional expertise in investment funds, cross-border transactions, and dispute resolution, making her a valuable asset to the firm's new operations.

As a Hong Kong-registered foreign lawyer with qualifications in both Japan and New York, Shiokawa has an impressive track record. Previously, she worked as a consultant at Conyers Dill & Pearman and has held partnerships at renowned firms like Harney Westwood & Riegels and Withers, both in Hong Kong and London. She will lead the Hong Kong office and collaborate closely with partner Norika Yuasa, a crucial contributor to the firm's Chinese practice.

Despite the rapid expansion, Miura expressed that there are no immediate plans to recruit local lawyers in Hong Kong, emphasizing the firm's current strategy and focus.

With this strategic move, Miura & Partners is poised not only to enhance its service offering in Greater China but also to reinforce its commitment to facilitating investment and legal solutions in one of Asia's most integral business hubs. The launch of the Hong Kong office marks an exciting chapter for the firm and its clients, propelling them into a new era of growth and opportunity.
