Minecraft Movie Crushes Competition

In an astonishing display of box office prowess, "A Minecraft Movie" raked in a whopping $80 million during its second weekend, clinching the number one spot even as five new films hit theaters.

Despite a 50% drop from its record-shattering opening weekend that brought in $162.7 million, this decline is exceptionally good for a blockbuster of its magnitude. The film, featuring stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has amassed an impressive $281 million domestically and a staggering $550 million globally. Within just ten days, it has become the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing Disney and Marvel’s "Captain America: Brave New World," which stands at $199 million domestically.

A Resurgence for Theaters

Following a rough start to 2025, the success of "A Minecraft Movie" has breathed new life into theaters, lifting box office revenues that were previously down 11% compared to last year and 40% behind 2019. Now, the deficit has shrunk to a mere 0.5% ahead of 2024, although it still lags 31% behind pre-pandemic numbers.

This turnaround sets a promising tone for the summer movie season, according to Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian, who noted, "‘A Minecraft Movie’ arrived like the cavalry after a sluggish month of March for theaters."

New Releases Make Waves

Among the new releases, "The King of Kings," a family-friendly animated film from Angel Studios, opened solidly in second place, earning $19 million from 3,200 theaters. This vibrant retelling of Jesus Christ’s biography is backed by a star-studded voice cast, including Kenneth Branagh and Uma Thurman. Although critics rated it only 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences awarded it a rare "A+" on CinemaScore.

Angel Studios, known for incentivizing family viewership with its "Kids Go Free" program, is seeing great demand for quality films in theaters, per Brandon Purdie, the company’s head of theatrical distribution.

Disney's ‘The Amateur’ Fails to Dazzle

In third place, Disney's vigilante thriller "The Amateur" debuted with $15 million. Featuring Rami Malek as a CIA analyst seeking vengeance, it accumulated $32.2 million globally. While the film received a "B+" on CinemaScore, it will need to sustain its run to recoup its $60 million production budget.

A4's Warfare Thrills Audiences

Landing at fourth was A24’s military thriller "Warfare," capturing $8.3 million from 2,670 theaters. Priced at $20 million to produce, the film, directed by veteran Ray Mendoza, garnered an "A-" on CinemaScore and scored an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Horror Film ‘Drop’ Underwhelms But Survives

Rounding out the top five, Universal and Blumhouse's horror film "Drop" limped in with $7.7 million. Despite underwhelming international numbers, its modest budget of $11 million might allow it to break even. The film follows a mother's nightmarish experience during a date that spirals into chaos due to threats against her family.

Faith-Based Films Hold Their Ground

Fathom Event’s "The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3" opened in sixth place, earning $6.15 million. Despite competition from "King of Kings," these figures align well with previous installments of the series.

Disney’s Snow White Stumbles

In another notable development, Disney’s "Snow White" remake has seen its fortunes fade, falling to eighth place with $2.8 million during its fourth weekend. With only $81.9 million domestically to date, this adaptation has become Disney's lowest-grossing live-action remake.
