In a startling revelation, Mark Gerhard, co-CEO of MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy, has suggested that the game's negative reception ahead of its release might be the result of a deliberate smear campaign orchestrated against the studio.
MindsEye is the highly anticipated action-adventure thriller from former GTA producer Leslie Benzies, set to launch on June 10 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Following the recent release of an exciting new trailer showcasing its innovative features, including a unique mission creation system, excitement should be building. However, the reality seems far less rosy.
Despite the trailer and the involvement of seasoned industry veterans, early opinions have been disappointing. Critiques have surfaced online labeling MindsEye a "broken mess" riddled with bugs and depicting enemy interactions as shallow and lacking depth.
In a surprising exchange on the MindsEye Discord server, Gerhard was asked if he suspects that the negative feedback is financially motivated. His blunt response? "100 percent." When further challenged about the unexpected nature of his claims, he confidently stated, "Not wild when it’s true…."
Adding fuel to the fire, Gerhard hinted that it wouldn’t take a genius to figure out who might be behind this backlash, punctuating his comment with an amused emoji. He later expanded on his assertion, claiming there exists a "concerted effort" aimed at undermining both MindsEye and Build a Rocket Boy.
Gerhard elaborated, "There are certain individuals who do not wish for Leslie or Build A Rocket Boy to succeed, and they are actively working to disparage the game and the studio. It's evident when you observe the bots and repetitive responses to our content."
In light of Gerhard's provocative statements, Eurogamer reached out to Build a Rocket Boy for clarification, but both the studio and publisher IO Interactive were unable to provide further comment at this time.
As the release date approaches, the question remains: will MindsEye overcome these sabotaging efforts to emerge as a formidable player in the gaming world?
