Launched back in 2016 but riddled with inconsistencies, the dark mode has been a source of frustration for users as many interface elements remained glaringly bright.

However, hope is on the horizon! The latest preview builds of Windows 11 reveal a sneak peek at newly revamped dark interfaces within File Explorer. The discovery, initially shared by tech enthusiast Phantomofearth on X, showcases a hidden dark mode applied to the file copy window, the file deletion prompt, and file permissions popup. Take a look at the screenshots, and you'll see these UI components finally don a sleek dark grey that perfectly matches the ambiance of the overall File Explorer.

While this may seem like a minor update, it’s a monumental leap forward considering the stagnation we’ve faced for over half a decade. It’s baffling why Microsoft allowed dark mode to languish in such an unfinished state across Windows 10 and 11. What took them so long to address these long-standing issues? That remains a puzzling mystery.

Yet, this preliminary glimpse raises hopes for further enhancements. There’s still a myriad of legacy UI elements craving a dark mode makeover—the Run dialog, Registry Editor, Group Policy, and more. As we approach 2025, there’s absolutely no justification for these critical components to lack cohesive dark theming.

Compare this to other platforms, which have enjoyed comprehensive dark modes for years. When macOS rolled out its dark mode, it was a seamless integration across all apps and interfaces. Chrome OS and iPadOS followed suit, leaving Windows seeming embarrassingly behind.

Microsoft has yet to officially announce these new dark mode updates for File Explorer. It’s possible that more exciting features are in the pipeline and we’re just getting a taste of what’s to come.
