Meta is on a fast track to unveil its cutting-edge Llama AI model, known as Llama 4.X, by year's end. This ambitious project is one of the first initiatives from the newly established Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL).
A team within the MSL's TBD group is diligently working to ensure these models are production-ready as they aim for a December launch, according to insiders who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Llama 4.X, sometimes referred to as Llama 4.5, follows the lukewarm reception of Meta's earlier models released in April, including Scout and Maverick. Developers expressed disappointment, feeling these models stumbled in essential tasks like coding and reasoning.
The TBD team is not only focused on rolling out Llama 4.X but is also patching bugs and enhancing the previous Llama 4 models, as highlighted by sources.
Adding to the intrigue, an AI model dubbed Behemoth was initially planned within the Llama 4 family, but The Wall Street Journal reported that this launch has been delayed.
Meta remained tight-lipped when approached for comment but pointed to CEO Mark Zuckerberg's remarks during the company's second-quarter earnings call. Zuckerberg stated that MSL is dedicated to advancing the future of AI models.
He confidently noted, "We're making good progress towards Llama 4.1 and 4.2, and simultaneously, our next-gen models will push the boundaries in the coming year."
Zuckerberg announced the formation of MSL in an internal memo back in June, following a strategic reorganization of Meta's AI teams into four key areas: training, research, product, and infrastructure.
An internal memo from MSL head Alexandr Wang later clarified that TBD would focus on training and scaling massive models to achieve superintelligence, hinting at the development of an ambitious 'omni model,' though details remain sparse.
In a notable talent acquisition strategy, Meta has reportedly been attracting top AI researchers from competitors like OpenAI and Google DeepMind, offering substantial compensation packages.
However, just two months into its launch, MSL has faced challenges, experiencing a wave of departures, with at least eight employees, including senior leaders, parting ways with the company.
