The Mighty Contender Makes Waves Off the U.S. Coast

On January 17, 2025, a remarkable great white shark named Contender was captured, tagged, and released by the non-profit OCEARCH, just 45 miles off the Florida-Georgia coast. Since his release, Contender has embarked on an adventurous journey along the Atlantic, first traveling southward along Florida's coastline and then becoming elusive for nearly four weeks.

In April, he re-emerged off the coast of North Carolina, roaming those waters until early June before slipping back into silence. His latest tracker ping on July 18 revealed his presence near Cape Cod, Massachusetts—a hotspot notorious for shark activity.

A Giant Among Giants: Meet the 750-Kilogram Wonder

At a staggering weight of 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds) and a length of 14 feet, Contender eclipses many of his male counterparts. Typically, females, often measuring up to 16 feet, overshadow males, who average between 11 to 13 feet. Yet, Contender stands out as a monumental force of nature and a noteworthy figure in the shark community.

Dr. Harley Newton, chief veterinarian at OCEARCH, emphasized the significance of this impressive male. “Male white sharks mature around 11.5 feet and at 26 years old. Contender’s size and age indicate he’s likely in his early 30s and plays a crucial role in the nurturing population of western North Atlantic white sharks.”

Rivaling Giants: The Great White Shark Family Tree

While OCEARCH has tagged larger female sharks like the formidable Mary Lee, measuring 16 feet and weighing in at 1,197 kilograms (2,639 pounds), and Nukumi, standing at 17 feet 2 inches, the fascination with sharks doesn't end there. The largest great white recorded is the legendary Deep Blue, a female stretching over 20 feet long and believed to be around 50 years old.

Despite her enormous size and fame, Deep Blue remains an enigma. First sighted in the 1990s, much of her early existence was undocumented. Since then, numerous sightings have sparked intrigue, though confirming her current whereabouts is a mystery.

With Contender now part of the breeding population, hopes are high for the recovery of the great white population in the western North Atlantic.
