A Sweet Partnership Comes to an End

In a surprising twist, McDonald's and Krispy Kreme have decided to end their collaboration, effective July 2nd. This partnership, which began with high expectations just over a year ago, has proven to be less successful than anticipated.

Why the Doughnuts Didn't Fly?

Despite a promising start in March 2024, where McDonald’s introduced three types of Krispy Kreme doughnuts at select locations following a successful trial in Kentucky, the demand just wasn’t there. Reports indicate that Krispy Kreme couldn't recoup its costs from sales at McDonald's outlets.

Limited Rollout and Early Withdrawal

Initially, the plan was ambitious: to have Krispy Kreme’s famous treats available at McDonald's locations nationwide by 2026. However, the rollout was limited to only 2,400 out of nearly 14,000 U.S. stores, leading to this abrupt decision to part ways.

Reflections on a Sweet Collaboration

Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald’s chief marketing officer, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, highlighting the quality of Krispy Kreme’s products. However, both companies recognized that for it to be sustainable, it needed to be profitable for Krispy Kreme as well.

Where to Get Your Fix Now?

Even though McDonald's will cease selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts, fear not! The North Carolina-based company will continue to serve its delightful pastries through U.S. grocery stores and other high-volume retailers. Customers can still indulge in their favorite doughnuts; they just won’t be available through the golden arches anymore.
