Among the crowds, students articulated their motivations, clarifying that their opposition to the Israeli government does not equate to antisemitism. As one student, Alessandra, stated, "This is about a government that is committing genocide while the world looks away."

Striking a Chord

Under the banner of "Let’s Block Everything," participants in the general strike demanded the suspension of Italy's commercial and military ties with Israel and showed support for the Global Sumud Flotilla, a campaign to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and breach Israel’s naval blockade.

The protests were not without turmoil; in Milan, tensions escalated dramatically when a faction of protesters attempted to storm the central train station, resulting in clashes with police. Authorities responded with pepper spray and water cannons to disperse demonstrators blocking key roads. Despite the chaos, many continued to call for urgent action.

Prime Minister Meloni condemned the violence, insisting that destruction is not a path to solidarity. Meanwhile, her administration, which has leaned towards maintaining strong ties with former President Trump’s US, has adopted a cautious approach regarding the Gaza conflict.
