In a surprising twist in the AL West, the Seattle Mariners have made a strategic move to bolster their struggling outfield by claiming switch-hitter Leody Taveras off waivers from the Texas Rangers.
To create space on their 40-man roster for Taveras, the Mariners designated right-handed pitcher Luis F. Castillo. Taveras, a promising 26-year-old with speed, was placed on waivers as the Rangers look to regain a full-strength outfield.
This addition comes at a crucial time for Seattle, who has been hit hard by injuries. Luke Raley, a key player, has been sidelined with a right oblique strain for at least six weeks, and Victor Robles, expected to start as right fielder, is recovering from a shoulder injury with no return in sight until midseason.
Currently, Taveras is batting .241 with one home run, three doubles, six stolen bases, and a .601 OPS over 30 games this season. Although he has struggled with 23 strikeouts against just two walks in 82 plate appearances, his potential impact could be significant.
Notably, during the Rangers' 2023 World Series-winning season, Taveras showcased his abilities with a strong performance—hitting .266 with 14 homers, 31 doubles, and a remarkable 14 steals. Although his 2023 performance dipped with a .229 average, he still managed a career-high of 23 steals.
Considered a top prospect in the 2015 international class, Taveras stood out in the Texas system and was ranked highly by several publications. With Seattle recently struggling in right field, relying on utility players like Miles Mastrobunoi and Triple-A callups, Taveras could bring both depth and versatility.
As the Mariners adjust their lineup, Taveras’s ability to hit left-handed could complement returning utility player Dylan Moore, who excels against lefties. This gives Seattle the opportunity to create a dynamic platoon in right field.
Exclusively playing center field in the majors, Taveras has experience in the corners from his minor league days, showcasing his adaptability on the field.
Currently stationed in Sacramento, the Mariners gear up for the second match of their three-game series against the Athletics, looking to leverage this new acquisition as they navigate a challenging season.
