In a surprising announcement, Marc Maron revealed that his iconic podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, will come to an end this fall after an impressive 16-year run.

On his latest episode, Maron opened up about the decision, stating, It’s nice to be able to end things on our own terms. We started the show on our own terms and we’ll end it on our own terms. He and his producing partner, Brendan McDonald, reached this unanimous decision simply because they felt burnt out.

Reflecting on the journey, Maron shared, WTF will turn 16 years old on September 1. That’s a long time, folks! All of a sudden, you’re old and realize you’ve been doing something for so long. This started in my garage when nobody even knew what a podcast was. It was a time when he was grappling with personal challenges, including a difficult divorce.

Maron reminisced about how the podcast evolved from its humble beginnings — broadcasting from a cluttered garage — to becoming a major player in the podcasting world. For 16 years, we’ve put out new episodes every Monday and Thursday. Now, we feel it’s time to say goodbye.

The final episode will air sometime this fall, with Maron eager to include as many guests as possible for what he calls the home stretch. We realized together that we were done. There was no convincing or arguing — it’s simply time, he stated, reassuring fans that endings can be positive.

Even though the podcast is ending, Maron is excited about what the future holds. He teased upcoming projects, including a new show on Apple with Owen Wilson set to premiere this Wednesday, and a deeply personal documentary titled Are We Good?, which explores his grief following the loss of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton.

Additionally, fans can look forward to a new HBO comedy special filmed in New York City, showcasing his comedic talents. We’re tired, we’re burnt out, but we’re utterly satisfied with the work we’ve done, Maron affirmed.

Since its launch on September 1, 2009, WTF has remained one of the most-streamed and downloaded podcasts, boasting nearly 2,000 episodes and an astounding 55 million annual listens. Maron has conversed with a diverse range of guests, from Robin Williams and Keith Richards to former President Barack Obama.

As Maron heads into this next chapter, he leaves behind a monumental legacy in podcasting and a devoted fanbase eager to see what he will do next.
