Lorne Michaels Unveils Bold Satire Plans for ‘SNL’s’ Groundbreaking 50th Season Amidst Election Frenzy

2024-09-19

In a world increasingly divided by politics, “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) has long embraced the challenge of bringing humor to the political arena. As the show approaches its landmark 50th season, creator Lorne Michaels is eager to continue this tradition, especially with the high-stakes election looming in November.

Michaels revealed that this season will not only focus on biting political satire but will also celebrate beloved former cast members making surprise appearances throughout the election coverage. "We want to honor the legacy of the show with guest appearances from those who love it, not merely as hosts but as part of a greater celebration," he told the Hollywood Reporter.

One notable comeback is Maya Rudolph, who will reprise her popular role as Vice President Kamala Harris. In an unexpected twist, comedy legend Steve Martin is also set to appear but, contrary to public demand, he will not take on the role of Harris’s running mate, Tim Walz.

Michaels also addressed the highly discussed potential return of Alec Baldwin as former President Donald Trump. While he didn’t confirm whether Baldwin would don the familiar wig, he did assure fans that current cast member James Austin Johnson, known for his Trump impersonation, “will be there” to tackle the complexities of the former president's evolving persona.

"Trump has morphed," Michaels stated. "We have to reinvent it again because, let’s face it, the political landscape changes rapidly. One of the great aspects of our business is the necessity to adapt and innovate; we aim to reexamine all the characters involved."

Maintaining the show's comedic integrity is paramount for Michaels. "You can't lecture the audience, which is a trend in politics nowadays. Our approach acknowledges that there are, indeed, absurdities on both sides,” he explained. “Ultimately, we're a comedy show first."

Mark your calendars, because ‘SNL’ kicks off its monumental 50th season on September 28th on NBC! Join us for the festivities as “Hacks” star Jean Smart takes the helm as host, and musical sensation Jelly Roll sets the stage ablaze with a performance that promises to be unforgettable.
