With the unfortunate news that star running back David Montgomery will be sidelined for an extended period, the Detroit Lions are facing a pressing need to bolster their backfield. While they still boast the talents of second-year standout Jahmyr Gibbs and dependable backup Craig Reynolds, it’s clear that they need to explore extra options to deepen their running back lineup.
Montgomery's absence creates a gap that might not be easily filled, but several intriguing candidates exist on other teams’ practice squads. The Lions have a history of successfully picking up talent from practice squads, having previously signed players like Isaiah Thomas and Myles Adams this season.
Here are three running backs from other teams’ practice squads that the Lions should consider adding to their roster:
1. Dalvin Cook, Dallas Cowboys
Once a four-time Pro Bowler, Cook currently finds himself on the Cowboys' practice squad during the 2024 season. Although he's only been elevated to the active roster twice and managed just eight carries for 20 yards, his past performance speaks volumes—he notched over 1,100 rushing yards for four consecutive seasons not long ago.
However, concerns linger regarding Cook's age (29) and a laundry list of past injuries, including a torn ACL and shoulder issues that have caused him to miss 27 games in his eight-year career. Nevertheless, with his size (5'10", 210 lbs) and dual-threat ability, Cook could seamlessly complement Gibbs in a dynamic backfield powerhouse.
2. Royce Freeman, Chicago Bears
Freeman was a third-round pick in 2018 and entered the league as a starting running back for the Denver Broncos. Though he currently sits on the practice squad of the Chicago Bears, his experience and power could make him an appealing option for Detroit.
Standing at 6 feet and weighing 238 pounds, Freeman is the biggest back available and possesses a surprising 4.54 second 40-yard dash time. While he may not contribute significantly in the passing game, averaging under 100 receiving yards annually, he could thrive in short-yardage situations, functioning as a strong complement to Gibbs’ versatility. However, his lack of live-game experience this season could be a hurdle for the Lions.
3. Zonovan Knight, New York Jets
A familiar face to the Lions, Knight competed for a backup role in the 2023 season before landing on the Jets' practice squad. Although he only made minimal contributions in two games last year, Knight provides valuable speed, agility, and the capacity to handle short-yardage plays—even as a younger alternative to Montgomery.
Besides his offensive capabilities, Knight brings special teams experience, having showcased his skills as a kick returner during his time with Detroit. He executed two returns for 45 yards last year and was more prolific in college. Given the current injury to kick returner Khalil Dorsey, Knight could fill in that role immediately, providing the Lions more versatility.
As the Lions navigate this critical juncture, management’s decision to bring in a running back from a practice squad might determine their offensive dynamic moving forward. Every moment counts as they rely on their remaining backs—so will they act quickly enough to capitalize on the available talent?
Stay tuned, because with Montgomery out of the picture, these decisions can make or break the Lions' season!
