Letitia Wright, the talented star of hits like Black Panther and Death on the Nile, just made waves with her directorial debut, a short film titled *Highway to the Moon*, showcased at the South London Film Festival.
During her enthralling appearance at the inaugural SXSW London, Wright opened up about her journey, revealing how she battled through "impostor syndrome" to take on the role of director. She emphasized the importance of humbling herself and surrounding herself with experienced mentors willing to teach her the intricacies of directing, from the technical jargon to the creative processes involved.
In a heartfelt moment, Wright reminisced about the prophetic words of Black Panther's director, Ryan Coogler, who once told her, "You will be directing soon." Initially dismissing his belief as madness, she was stunned when the same sentiment was echoed by a well-known actor just days later, turning Coogler’s words into reality.
Reflecting on her past, Wright expressed how her love for cinema blossomed during her teenage years, stating, "I became a cinephile at age 13." Despite feeling like a loner, this passion led her to explore and watch countless films, shaping her artistic vision.
When discussing her future aspirations, Wright revealed that her focus transcends mere fame; she aims to create a lasting legacy and make a positive impact. "It's about legacy and purpose," she asserted, determined to leave a significant mark on the industry.
Addressing the challenges of fame, Wright acknowledged that navigating its complexities requires immense strength, particularly in the face of disrespect. "They don’t give us the grace to be human," she lamented, highlighting the need for understanding and respect in the public eye.
As for her favorite projects, while appreciating her diverse filmography, Wright expressed a special fondness for her role in Danai Gurira's stage play *The Convert*, performed at the Young Vic Theatre, citing it as one of her treasured experiences.
The SXSW London event, which features a diverse range of voices, also included Nigerian singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage. The festival, celebrating its first-ever European edition, runs through June 7, offering a platform for rising stars and established artists alike.
