Houston Defeats BYU in Thrilling Semifinal

In a thrilling Big 12 tournament semifinal, the Houston Cougars bested the BYU Cougars, yet head coach Kelvin Sampson took a moment to acknowledge the remarkable growth of the opposing team since their previous encounter on January 4.

Sampson's Admiration for BYU's Improvements

Sampson expressed his admiration for BYU's improvements, stating, “(In studying BYU on film) the first thing that jumped out to me was how much better they have become since January 4th. That was a long time ago. The coaching job that Kevin Young has done with that team is impressive. They’ve got really good players.”

BYU's Promising Outlook Ahead of NCAA Tournament

The BYU team has shown significant evolution, and Sampson noted, “They’re going to get a great seed in the NCAA tournament. They’re going to be a tough out for whoever plays them.” This marks a promising outlook for BYU as they anticipate their placement in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Houston's Defensive Dominance

The game itself showcased Houston's defensive prowess, limiting BYU to a mere 31.7% shooting from the field and a dismal 21.4% from beyond the arc, while forcing 13 turnovers throughout the match. Notably, Houston's defense has held BYU to its two worst offensive performances of the season.

Sampson's Confidence in Team

“We're proud of our guys,” said Sampson. “Our defense is our defense, and the way we rebound, we've been doing this for a long time. The first-half defense was outstanding.” Looking ahead, he mentioned how the team adjusted their strategy in the second half, aiming to capitalize on driving to the basket to counter BYU’s aggressive play.

Looking Ahead to the NCAA Tournament

With their significant victory, Houston, who is also the Big 12 regular-season champion, is almost certain to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Looking toward the conference title game on Saturday, Sampson remains confident in his team's dominance throughout the season. “The championship game tomorrow night doesn’t determine the Big 12 champion; the regular season determines the Big 12 champion. That's why you play 20 games,” he affirmed.

Big 12 Conference Highlights

As the excitement builds for the conference championship and NCAA tournament, the spotlight remains on the Big 12, with Sampson stating, “These three days are an awesome chance for the Big 12 to show how great this conference is.” Expect Houston to continue its strong defensive play in the quest for a national title, while BYU prepares to make its mark on the tournament stage.
