During a session in the House of Commons, Conservative frontbencher Katie Lam pressed for an update, highlighting that Baroness Casey's findings, along with a necessary framework for local inquiries, were due to be released in May. As tensions flared, Phillips acknowledged the frustration, saying, "I apologize for the month's wait," but added pointedly, "I've waited 14 years," referring to a history of inaction under previous Conservative leadership.

The Promise of Clarity!

Phillips assured MPs that Baroness Casey had only requested a brief extension of the deadline. "We expect to see the report very shortly," she declared, emphasizing that the government would respond promptly with a thorough plan of action once all the data was analyzed.

A Turn from Inquiry Calls to Local Solutions

Earlier this year, the government rejected calls for a national inquiry, stating that a comprehensive examination had already taken place over seven years, led by Professor Alexis Jay. Instead, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced Casey's audit as a more focused approach to tackle the issues at hand.

Funds for Local Action, but Room for More!

Cooper also unveiled an initial fund of £5 million aimed at supporting victim-centered local inquiries in Oldham and four additional undisclosed areas. In a Commons meeting in April, Phillips hinted that more inquiries could evolve beyond those initially proposed, pledging to deliver further details pending the audit's release.

Pressure for a Nationwide Inquiry Grows!

The Conservatives are doubling down on their push for a nationwide inquiry equipped with the power to compel testimonies, arguing that some local bodies may shy away from conducting their own reviews. Phillips went on to assert that if Casey highlighted shortcomings within certain local authorities, she would ensure they are held accountable.
