After revealing his battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer last year, Van Der Beek was excited to participate in a live reading of the pilot episode, which is set to benefit cancer awareness. However, the actor has been sidelined by two stomach viruses, forcing him to miss this special event.

In an emotional Instagram post, he expressed his disappointment, saying, "This was the evening I’d been looking forward to MOST since my angel Michelle Williams put it together. It’s gut-wrenching to be taken out of commission just when I wanted to be there the most."

However, there's a twist! In his absence, Broadway legend Lin-Manuel Miranda will take over the role of Dawson. Van Der Beek jokingly called Miranda, "a ridiculously overqualified replacement" and noted that his kids would consider this an upgrade.
