Jake Retzlaff's Unexpected Exit from BYU

In a dramatic turn of events, quarterback Jake Retzlaff took to social media on Friday to announce his withdrawal from Brigham Young University (BYU) and its football program. This news follows a civil lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault and battery earlier this year, although that case was dismissed on June 30.

Retzlaff faced a reported seven-game suspension for breaching the school's honor code, and speculation about his departure had circulated in recent weeks as sources indicated his intention to transfer.

Heartfelt Goodbye

In an emotional Instagram post, Retzlaff expressed gratitude for his time at BYU. "After a lot of prayer, reflection, and conversations with those I trust, I’ve made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from BYU and step away from the BYU Football program,” he stated.

BYU Athletics echoed his sentiments, wishing him the best as he moves into the next phase of his career.

Future Playing Plans?

Shortly after Retzlaff's announcement, ESPN reporter Pete Thamel revealed that Retzlaff plans to transfer but won't use the NCAA transfer portal. Instead, he’s said to be looking to directly enroll at a new school.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported that bypassing the portal might be the easiest route for Retzlaff, as entering it would necessitate a waiver for him to play in 2025.

Additionally, several Power Four programs are reportedly interested in bringing Retzlaff on board.

A Promising, Yet Controversial Journey

A standout athlete from California, Retzlaff made headlines not only for his performance but also as one of the few Jewish students at BYU. He transferred to BYU in 2023 after two successful seasons at the junior college level, stepping in as starting quarterback during the Cougars' final games.

Retzlaff led the team to an impressive 11-2 record last season, earning a No. 13 national ranking and significant buzz as a potential College Football Playoff contender.

Reflecting on His Time at BYU

In his poignant farewell, Retzlaff highlighted that BYU was more than just an athletic journey for him. "It’s been a place of growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically. I’m grateful for every teammate, coach, staff member, and fan who’s supported me along the way,” he wrote.

As he closes this chapter, Retzlaff seems poised for new opportunities. "I’m excited to turn the page and embrace the next chapter. My journey is far from over—and I’m more motivated than ever to keep chasing my goals!"
