Jaedyn Shaw Heads to NC Courage in Major Trade

In a significant move within the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), rising star Jaedyn Shaw is set to join the North Carolina Courage through a trade from San Diego Wave FC. Multiple sources have confirmed that the trade involves a substantial financial package for the Wave, positioning it among the largest intra-league transfers in NWSL history.

At just 20 years old, Shaw is already making waves as one of the brightest talents on the U.S. women's national team. She has showcased her versatility on the field, capable of playing several positions in both the forward and midfield lines. Although she has expressed a preference for the No. 10 role, her adaptability makes her an invaluable asset to any team.

The trade comes in light of the NWSL's new collective bargaining agreement, which now mandates player consent for trades. Earlier in 2024, Shaw had proactively requested a transfer, prompting the Wave to negotiate a favorable deal.

Courage's Offensive Struggles

North Carolina Courage has been struggling offensively, finishing the 2024 season with the fewest goals (34 in 26 games) among the top six teams. A critical aspect of this struggle has been the injury that sidelined Brazilian attacker Kerolin for most of the season. Kerolin, who was named NWSL MVP in 2023, is currently a free agent, adding to speculation about her future and leaving a significant gap in NC Courage’s attack.

Shaw made headlines in 2022 when she turned professional at the age of 17, making her the second-youngest player in league history at her debut. She achieved a remarkable feat by scoring in her first three NWSL games, further solidifying her reputation as a talented forward. Her senior international debut in October 2023 marked the beginning of her involvement in the national team's journey towards the 2024 Olympics, where the U.S. ultimately claimed gold. Unfortunately, a leg injury kept her off the field during the critical moments of the tournament.

With eight goals in just 21 caps, Shaw has proven to be a dynamic contributor to the national team, earning praise for her capability to both create and finish scoring opportunities. U.S. coach Emma Hayes lauded her performance after she scored just minutes into her return match against Iceland in October.
