In a groundbreaking move, Elecom has unveiled what it claims to be the first power bank designed for consumers that utilizes sodium-ion battery technology, as noted by Notebookcheck.

This innovative 9,000mAh power bank, dubbed the Na Plus, not only boasts a more environmentally friendly manufacturing process but also promises to thrive in extreme conditions with a reduced risk of overheating.

According to Elecom, this power bank can withstand nearly 5,000 charging cycles. This means that even with daily use, you can rely on it to function for up to 13 years!

While sodium-ion technology is relatively new compared to the established lithium-ion batteries that have dominated the market since the early '90s, it offers a promising alternative.

Currently, production capacity for sodium-ion batteries hasn’t quite caught up to their lithium counterparts. However, there may be a persistent challenge: sodium-ion batteries are generally larger and heavier than their lithium-ion counterparts. For instance, while Anker’s 10,000mAh lithium battery weighs approximately 213 grams, the Na Plus comes in at a heftier 350 grams with a bulkier design.

This larger size limits sodium-ion batteries to applications where weight isn't a primary concern. They could be ideal for energy storage systems harnessing renewable sources, backup power supplies, or even powering larger vehicles like cargo ships.

Overall, while Elecom's Na Plus sodium-ion power bank may carry a hefty price tag and may not be the most portable option, it signifies an exciting step forward in battery technology.
