Rumors Clash Over iPhone 17 Display Features
In a surprising twist, a Chinese leaker, known for their checkered track record, has challenged rumors claiming that the upcoming iPhone 17 and its sleek counterpart, the iPhone 17 Air, will boast ProMotion displays.
ProMotion technology, which debuted with the iPhone 13 Pro series, has traditionally been exclusive to Pro models. Yet, multiple reports hinted that this year, Apple might introduce 120Hz variable refresh rates for the standard iPhone 17 and the newly minted iPhone 17 Air, which is designed to replace the iPhone 17 Plus.
Leaker Suggests Standard Instead of ProMotion
However, leaker Fixed Focus Digital, who operates on Weibo, insists their sources indicate the displays on the regular models will be "just a standard 120Hz screen," devoid of ProMotion’s adaptive refresh capabilities. If true, this would mean Apple is sticking with low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) screens for its base iPhone 17, while the previous iPhone 16 models retain a fixed 60Hz refresh rate.
What's at Stake Without ProMotion?
While a standard 120Hz display certainly offers a smoother experience—especially during scrolling and animations—it comes with downsides. It could lead to increased battery consumption as the screen refreshes rapidly at all times, even when displaying static images. In contrast, ProMotion smartly adjusts its refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz, maximizing battery efficiency.
Moreover, forgo ProMotion means losing out on Apple’s coveted always-on display feature, which showcases your Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper, even when idle.
New Developments May Favor ProMotion's Inclusion
Despite the skepticism surrounding this rumor, evidence for ProMotion's integration remains compelling. Industry insider Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, suggested last year that Apple’s suppliers are ramping up production of LTPO panels across all iPhone 17 variants. LTPO technology is known for its low power consumption and capability for variable refresh rates—essentially the feature ProMotion offers.
Through confirmation from sources like South Korea’s ETNews and The Elec, the case for ProMotion’s arrival in non-Pro iPhones appears stronger than ever.
A Mixed Bag of Predictions from Fixed Focus Digital
While Fixed Focus Digital has made several accurate predictions, such as the early identification of the iPhone 16E and the color update for iPhone 16 Pro models, they have also missed the mark regarding available color options for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
As the iPhone 17 launch nears, expected in September, all eyes are on Apple and the features it will decide to unveil. Will it prioritize innovation with ProMotion across the lineup or opt for more traditional display technology? Only time will tell!
