In a dramatic shift for one of America’s tech giants, Intel's new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, is shaking things up. Employees should brace themselves for less flexibility in their work arrangements and the unsettling news of impending layoffs.

In a letter released late Thursday, Tan made it clear that hybrid workers will be required in the office at least four days a week starting September 1—a significant increase from the previous expectation of about three days. This change comes as a response to inconsistent adherence to the flexible work policy among staff.

Tan emphasized the need for vibrant, collaborative workspaces that embody the company culture, mirroring similar moves by major U.S. corporations like Amazon which are reevaluating their remote work policies established during the pandemic.

While detailing quarterly financial results—far from optimistic—Tan also hinted at a leaner management structure, reduction in unnecessary meetings, and a push to eliminate red tape within the company. Although he didn’t formally announce layoffs in his letter, it was evident that workforce reductions are on the horizon.

"There is no way around the fact that these critical changes will reduce the size of our workforce," Tan stated, underscoring the tough decisions needed to secure the company's future. He indicated that the reduction process will begin in the second quarter, with a commitment to act swiftly over the coming months.

As of last year, Intel boasted over 100,000 employees worldwide, making these impending shifts particularly significant for countless workers. The message from Tan is loud and clear: Intel is preparing to adopt a more traditional work model while facing harsh realities.
