India has officially reported its first case of the deadlier Ib strain of mpox, sparking concern among health officials worldwide regarding its rapid spread. The case was identified in a 38-year-old man from Kerala who had recently returned from Dubai, making it crucial for authorities to monitor the situation closely.

Response from Kerala's Health Minister

Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George, praised the state's proactive healthcare system for promptly identifying the case. This new outbreak, previously limited to the Democratic Republic of Congo, was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) last month following its spread to several African nations that had not encountered it before.

Global Concerns and Transmission

The Ib strain has now been detected in various countries outside Africa, including Sweden and Thailand, elevating fears of a potential global outbreak. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a contagious viral disease that can be transmitted through close contact—this includes physical interactions like touching and kissing, as well as through contaminated objects such as clothing and needles, according to WHO.

Symptoms and Clades of Mpox

Symptoms of mpox can range from fever, rash, and lesions to muscle pain and swollen lymph nodes. There are two main genetic clades of the virus: Clade I and Clade II. Notably, Clade II was responsible for the global outbreak that led to a previous WHO health emergency from July 2022 to May 2023, but the Ib strain is known to cause more severe disease.

Update on the Infected Patient

Dr. Shubhin C, a health official from Mallapuram, Kerala, provided updates on the infected patient, stating he is currently recovering in isolation at a local hospital. The doctor noted a positive trend in the patient’s recovery, with lesions beginning to heal and no new symptoms emerging. He is being tested every four days and will be discharged once he tests negative twice consecutively.

Tracking and Monitoring Possible Contacts

Health authorities have traced 29 individuals who had direct contact with the patient, and they are currently self-quarantined. Additionally, 37 passengers on the flight from Dubai to Kerala, alongside five other close contacts, are under observation.

Enhanced Surveillance Measures

Currently, there are five mpox testing facilities operational in the state, with plans to establish more if needed, along with dedicated isolation facilities.
