From Diesel to Electric: My Journey Begins
For over a decade, I've thrived in Brisbane's property market, flipping houses and renovating spaces. My trusty Volkswagen Amarok diesel pickup served me well since I purchased it in 2015, but the desire for an upgrade lingered. I was searching for something truly different, not just another variant of the same old trucks.
Discovering the BYD Shark Hybrid
In March, I took the plunge and bought the BYD Shark hybrid for AU$64,000 (around $41,000). While other brands like Ford and Toyota demand outrageous prices—up to AU$80,000 for what feels like inferior trucks—the BYD Shark stands out as a superior yet affordable alternative.
A Thrilling Driving Experience
Having only driven the Shark for about 2,000 kilometers, I'm still exploring its features, but so far, it's a joy to drive. The technology is impressive and the performance is exhilarating, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in just 5.7 seconds. The luxury inside rivals that of premium brands I've owned like Audi and BMW, offering incredible value.
Cost-Efficiency Meets Practicality
Using the Shark for both work and leisure brings significant advantages. Daily running costs are minimal. I harness solar power from my 30 panels, enabling me to charge the vehicle at an incredible price. Charging overnight costs me less than AU$2, a stark contrast to the AU$13 or AU$14 I'd expend on diesel with my Amarok. Plus, the truck comes equipped with handy power outlets for tools on-site.
No Range Anxiety Here
As an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle), the Shark incorporates two electric motors and a 1.5-liter petrol turbo engine that serves as a generator. I typically drive under 100 kilometers daily on electric power alone, but for longer trips, the petrol engine kicks in, providing me with a range of around 800 kilometers without breaking a sweat.
Concerns for the Future
However, I do worry about resale value down the line. The rapid advancement of vehicle technology means that my Shark could be seen as outdated within five years. While it has a six-year warranty, the uncertainty remains.
The Rise of Chinese EV Brands in Australia
I welcome the influx of Chinese EV brands in Australia, as they often deliver longer warranties and high-quality vehicles. Utes play a vital role in Australian culture, yet the Shark may struggle with some off-roading credentials compared to its competitors, as it lacks a diff lock for extreme terrains.
Final Thoughts: A Sustainable Choice
Despite its few drawbacks, driving the Shark is a pleasure. It’s rewarding to know I’m making an eco-friendly choice while saving money. It marks a thrilling chapter in my driving experience—a bold step into the future of vehicles.
