Hong Kong's Economic Vision Takes Center Stage
In an important move for Hong Kong's economic landscape, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr. Algernon Yau, is set to jet off to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on September 23. This trip marks his attendance at the highly anticipated ASEAN Economic Ministers - Hong Kong, China Consultation meeting.
The agenda is brimming with significance as Mr. Yau will engage in discussions with economic ministers from ASEAN member states. Key topics on the table include the progress of the ASEAN-HKC Free Trade Agreement and the Investment Agreement, as well as the future trajectory of economic cooperation between Hong Kong and ASEAN partners.
Building Bridges on the Ground
But that's not all! During his stay, Mr. Yau plans to hold pivotal bilateral meetings with various economic ministers, allowing for an exchange of insights and collaborative opportunities. This interaction is designed to strengthen mutual interests in trade and investment.
Adding more to his itinerary, Mr. Yau will meet with business representatives to showcase the unique advantages Hong Kong offers in terms of business opportunities, and will also explore local enterprises, particularly in the rapidly growing e-commerce sector.
Return to Hong Kong
Mr. Yau’s return to Hong Kong is scheduled for September 27. In his absence, the Under Secretary for Commerce, Dr. Bernard Chan, will assume the role of Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development.
Strengthening Legal Ties and International Partnerships
Meanwhile, on September 22, Chief Executive Mr. John Lee met with Mr. Ying Yong, the Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, at Government House.
This meeting marks a key moment as Hong Kong hosts the 15th China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference for the first time. Mr. Lee expressed appreciation for the Central Government's support in consolidating Hong Kong's role as a hub for legal exchanges, showcasing the SAR's unique position under the "one country, two systems" framework.
The conference's theme, "Combatting Money Laundering and Corruption in the Technological Age," underscores Hong Kong's status as a major international financial center, aligning its legal framework with global standards.
Mr. Lee emphasized ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation in prosecutorial matters between Hong Kong and the Mainland. This includes enhancing legal assistance and training to effectively tackle cross-border crimes, reinforcing the rule of law in both regions.
