Hong Kong is Buzzing with Fresh Energy

HONG KONG - Exciting news for the bustling metropolis! Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po revealed that visitor numbers have surged by an impressive 10%, totaling over 16 million in just the first four months of 2025. This uptick signifies a vibrant comeback for the city, celebrated at the HOFEX and ProWine Hong Kong joint trade fair.

A Boom in International Tourism

At the fair's opening ceremony, Chan highlighted a particularly remarkable statistic: a 17% increase in tourists from abroad. This boost is attributed to Hong Kong's strategic efforts in hosting more international events, aimed at attracting high-value visitors seeking unique experiences.

Culinary Capital of Asia

Chan proudly proclaimed Hong Kong as 'Asia's culinary capital,' boasting over 200 Michelin-recommended establishments featuring flavors from more than 30 countries. "We’re not just opening doors but also bottles," he declared, showcasing the city's vibrant food scene.

Liquor Tax Cut Boosts Imports

In a strategic move outlined in last October's Policy Address, the Hong Kong government dramatically reduced the liquor tax on high-alcohol spirits from 100% to just 10% for products exceeding HK$200 ($26). Since this change, liquor imports have skyrocketed by over 40%, while the value of imports has doubled.

A Free-Flowing Business Environment

With no duty on wines, the city imported approximately 39 million bottles, consuming about 30 million. Chan emphasized that Hong Kong’s status as a free port makes it the prime locale for food and hospitality businesses.

Connecting to the World and Beyond

"Every day, more than 1,000 flights link us to over 200 destinations, enhancing our connectivity to the broader Asian market," Chan stated. Highlighting expanding global relationships with regions like Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, he encouraged businesses to explore opportunities in Hong Kong.

A Gateway for Global Enterprises

Supported by entities like Invest Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Chan urged businesses to consider setting up regional offices in the city. "If you’re looking to expand your market reach, Hong Kong is your ultimate showroom," he concluded.
