In a bold move that reflects changing priorities, Labour and Welfare Minister Chris Sun has announced that the Hong Kong government will be shifting its focus from attracting talent to retaining it. Expanding Talent Focus

In an exclusive interview with the Wen Wei Po newspaper, Sun elaborated that while the city will continue its pursuit of top-tier talent, this effort will expand beyond just international sports icons. The objective is to create a more welcoming environment for professionals across various sectors.

Recent Developments in Talent Acquisition

The announcement comes on the heels of notable sporting figures such as snooker champions Judd Trump and Ronnie O'Sullivan obtaining residency in Hong Kong via the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme. Sun highlighted this trend as evidence of the city’s growing reputation as an appealing destination for global talent, saying, “These internationally acclaimed sports stars had many options, yet they chose Hong Kong. This is a testament to the city’s allure and competitiveness.”

Focus on Specific Sectors

However, the minister also clarified that there are currently no plans to broaden labor importation schemes to additional sectors, maintaining the focus on construction, transport, and care homes. This decision may come as a disappointment to industries seeking skilled workers amid labor shortages.

Population Growth and Integration Efforts

Since late 2022, Hong Kong has welcomed around 175,000 newcomers through various talent schemes, resulting in an influx of approximately 350,000 residents when considering their families. This significant population growth underscores the city's ongoing efforts to cultivate a vibrant, diverse workforce.

Challenges for New Arrivals

In terms of support for imported professionals, Sun stated that there will be no housing allowances provided, as the government prioritizes housing availability for local permanent residents.
