Enhancing Defense Against Cyber Threats

In a bold move to fortify its cyber defenses, Hong Kong launched its 9th Inter-departmental Cyber Security Drill on May 26th, orchestrated by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) and the Government Computer Emergency Response Team (GovCERT.HK). This vital exercise aims to bolster the ability of government departments to effectively tackle the increasing number of cyber attacks.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chow Yat-ming, emphasized the critical nature of this drill during his opening remarks. He highlighted the recent "Three-tier Prevention Framework" introduced in the Chief Executive's 2024 Policy Address, designed to enhance counter-terrorism strategies. For the first time, the drill showcased a new segment focusing on cybersecurity awareness and a dynamic "Cyber Defence Tournament,” aimed at sharpening the skills necessary to combat cyber terrorism.

Ms. Candy Chan, Assistant Commissioner for Cybersecurity at the Digital Policy Office, remarked on the drill's importance in equipping participants with practical experience. Over 280 representatives from 71 departments and industry experts participated, marking a record-breaking turnout. The training involved detecting threats, analyzing intrusions, and mounting appropriate responses to simulated attacks, ensuring participants are battle-ready for real-world scenarios.

The drill featured an engaging segment called the "Counter-Terrorism Information Security Awareness Challenge," utilizing a real-time Q&A platform to enhance the decision-making skills of senior managers and IT security personnel. This interactive approach not only raised security awareness but also fostered a culture of proactive cybersecurity management.
