Hong Kong on Alert: Strong Wind Signal No. 3 Could Be Issued as Severe Tropical Storm Toraji Looms
On November 12th, 2024, the Hong Kong Observatory has announced it will evaluate the issuance of Strong Wind Signal No. 3 tomorrow, November 13th, as the alarming Severe Tropical Storm Toraji approaches the southern coast of China.
Up to noon today, Toraji was situated approximately 580 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong, moving west-northwest at a speed of about 15 kilometers per hour over the northern part of the South China Sea. While the storm is expected to remain over 400 kilometers away from Hong Kong throughout the day, the onset of the northeast monsoon is anticipated to enhance wind conditions, potentially impacting the region significantly.
At present, the Standby Signal No. 1 is active, which indicates that a tropical cyclone in close proximity—within an 800-kilometer radius—could affect local weather patterns. The Observatory noted that, as of now, the intense winds associated with Toraji have not yet reached the Pearl River Estuary area.
As the forecast unfolds, Toraji is predicted to pass about 200 kilometers south of Hong Kong by the morning of Thursday, November 14th. As the storm's strength and the possibility of gale-force winds near the Pearl River Estuary intensify, the Observatory will continuously monitor the situation, determining if higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals are warranted.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant as weather conditions evolve. Preparations should be undertaken proactively to ensure safety, including securing loose outdoor items and staying tuned to updates from local authorities. This serves as a critical reminder of the unpredictability of tropical storms and the importance of readiness. Keep yourself informed and prepare for potential impacts!
