Hong Kong MTR Launches Escalator Safety Campaign: Stand on Both Sides!
In a bold move to enhance commuter safety, the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) has officially launched a campaign urging passengers to "stand on both sides of the escalator". This initiative, which began on November 8, aims to significantly reduce escalator-related injuries, a growing concern for the busy transport network.
Traditionally, Hong Kong commuters have adhered to the rule of standing on the right side of escalators, allowing those in a hurry to pass on the left. However, recent statistics reveal alarming figures: the MTR reported 430 escalator-related accidents in just the first nine months of this year. A staggering 60% of these incidents were attributed to passengers failing to hold onto handrails, walking while on the escalators, or losing their balance due to jostling.
To combat these troubling trends, the MTR is taking a proactive approach by joining numerous urban transit systems around the globe in encouraging uniformity on escalators—urging passengers to stand on both sides. The campaign will include loudspeaker announcements reminding riders to hold on to the handrails and maintain their balance. Additionally, the MTR plans to station safety ambassadors throughout MTR stations to reinforce these messages and assist those carrying large items to use lifts instead of escalators.
This initiative comes at a time when rapid urbanization and a fast-paced lifestyle have made safety a growing topic of concern in Hong Kong. Residents are known for their hustle and impatience, making it uncertain how well they will adapt to this new regulation. Only time will tell if Hong Kong can shift its commuting culture to prioritize not just speed, but also safety.
Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing safety campaign and how it might change the way Hongkongers navigate the bustling subway system!
