Hong Kong's Chief Executive's Reaction
Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee has cautiously welcomed Donald Trump’s inauguration, seeing it as a “good start” for US-China relations while simultaneously warning against any form of political interference.
Emphasis on Ties with the US
In a press briefing on Tuesday, shortly after Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, Lee emphasized that the Hong Kong government intends to strengthen its ties and exchanges with the United States during Trump’s second term. He remarked, “With the new president in office, this is a good start for China and US relations,” stressing the importance of 'mutual respect, mutual understanding, and common will.'
Concerns Over External Influence
The topic of Trump's previous comments regarding jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai arose during the briefing. Lai, the founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, is facing serious charges under the national security legislation imposed by Beijing. Trump had mentioned that it would be 'easy' to free Lai, igniting concerns about outside influence on Hong Kong's judicial processes. In response, Lee stated, 'Any political pressure would constitute a perversion of the course of justice,' and reiterated his hope that external parties refrained from interfering in legal matters being tried in Hong Kong.
Previous Statements Against US Interference
This isn't the first time Lee has voiced his position against interference from the US. In a previous statement last November, he highlighted the necessity for mutual respect between nations and reiterated that the US should refrain from meddling in Hong Kong's internal affairs.
Jimmy Lai's Trial and Accusations
Lai, aged 77, is currently on trial accused of a 'conspiracy to collude with foreign forces' under the national security law, as well as conspiring to publish 'seditious' materials from the colonial period. These allegations stem from his prominent role in promoting pro-democracy sentiments during Hong Kong's political upheaval.
Assurances of Legal Integrity
Lee assured reporters that justice in Hong Kong is 'rock solid,' pointing to the city’s stable legal framework. He claimed that all trials are conducted fairly, guided by law and judicial integrity. 'If there is any attempt to interfere with trials in Hong Kong, or officials involved in administering justice, it won’t work,' he added firmly.
The Controversial National Security Law
The national security law, which formed a vital part of Hong Kong's legal landscape since its implementation in June 2020, has been controversial due to its broad definitions and implications. Following massive pro-democracy protests, this legislation allowed authorities to crack down significantly on dissent, leading to the arrest of hundreds of individuals and the disbanding of numerous civil society organizations. Proponents of the law argue that it has restored order, despite widespread criticism from international communities including NGOs, trade partners, and the United Nations.
Global Concerns Over Human Rights
Last November, 45 notable pro-democracy activists received prison sentences of up to ten years for their roles in an unofficial primary election, a move that attracted global condemnation and raised serious concerns about human rights in Hong Kong. The UN expressed its dismay over the usage of the national security legislation to penalize activities that typically fall under protected rights such as freedom of expression and assembly.
Future Watch on Hong Kong's Internal Affairs
As this new era under Trump unfolds, the global community will be watching closely how Hong Kong navigates its internal affairs amidst external pressures and the broader geopolitical landscape.
