Strengthening Ties: A Successful Delegation Visit
In a groundbreaking move, a delegation of over 50 influential business leaders from Hong Kong and Mainland China, spearheaded by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), John Lee, wrapped up a significant visit to Kuwait on May 14, 2025. This successful initiative resulted in the formation of 24 bilateral agreements, marking a new era of collaboration between Hong Kong and the Middle East.
Unlocking Opportunities: Luncheon Highlights
At a vibrant luncheon attended by nearly 300 local business leaders, Mr. Lee emphasized Hong Kong's role as a 'Super Connector' and 'Super Value-Add' partner in nurturing business relationships and exploring opportunities in Kuwait. He stated, 'We are here to better understand the Kuwaiti market and how our regions can work together to foster long-term growth.'
Expanding Horizons: New Agreements Across Multiple Sectors
During this fruitful exchange, diverse sectors including economy, trade, technology, and education saw the establishment of memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements. A key highlight was the MOU signed between the Airport Authority Hong Kong and Kuwait Airways to enhance aviation connectivity, promising to bolster travel and trade.
Visa-Free Opportunities Unveiled
In a significant development, Mr. Lee announced that, effective immediately, the United Arab Emirates will grant Hong Kong travelers 30-day visa-free access, while Oman will extend its visa-free period from 10 to 14 days. This initiative reflects the commitment to improving mobility and fostering business interactions.
A Growing Economic Connection
Amidst the burgeoning trade, Mr. Lee noted that last year, trade between Hong Kong and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)—with Kuwait at the helm—surged to nearly $20 billion, a remarkable 53% increase over four years. He expressed optimism about the potential for a future free trade agreement between Hong Kong and the GCC, driven by the mutual desire to enhance economic ties.
High-Level Meetings: Strengthening Cooperation
Prior to the luncheon, Mr. Lee held high-profile discussions with Kuwait’s top leaders including the Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and the Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. Together, they explored avenues to deepen cooperation in finance, trade, and innovation.
Cultivating Cultural Connections
Beyond business, Mr. Lee's visit also included a tour of the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre, showcasing Kuwait's commitment to arts and culture. He expressed a keen interest in further enhancing cultural exchanges, reflecting the shared values both regions hold towards arts and cultural development.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Hong Kong and Kuwait
With the momentum gained from this visit, Hong Kong is poised to solidify its position as a pivotal gateway connecting China to the world. As partnerships flourish and opportunities expand, both regions stand to benefit significantly from this strategic alliance.
