Strengthening Ties: A Meeting of Minds

In a pivotal meeting on August 27th, Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Ms. Mable Chan, met with Dongguan's Mayor, Mr. Lyu Chengxi, to discuss plans for heightened collaboration in transport and logistics. This strategic alliance marks a significant step forward in uniting Hong Kong and Dongguan, two cities linked by deep geographical and cultural ties.

Groundbreaking Innovations in Logistics

Both cities are set to revolutionize sea-air intermodal cargo transshipments with the creation of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Dongguan Logistics Park. This ambitious initiative is part of a broader vision to capitalize on the complementary strengths of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The first phase of this logistics park is on track for completion this year, with full operational capabilities expected by 2027, enabling a robust framework for future growth.

Hong Kong: The Gateway of Trade

Ms. Chan emphasized Hong Kong's vital role as the GBA’s gateway for international trade. The Transport and Logistics Bureau is committed to a cooperative strategy aimed at seizing emerging opportunities within the GBA, enhancing intermodal transport, and exploring innovative exemptions under the Air Transhipment Cargo Scheme. These initiatives are geared towards integrating cargo flows and promoting seamless logistics operations throughout the region.

Harnessing Technology: The Future of Cargo Tracking

By the end of this year, the Port Community System will link local, Mainland, and international ports, creating a more efficient global shipping network. This system offers 24/7 real-time cargo tracking and advanced electronic services, further optimizing sea, land, and air transport operations and enhancing collaboration among ports internationally.

A Powerful Partnership for Global Reach

Highlighting Dongguan's status as a global manufacturing hub, Ms. Chan stated, "This collaboration demonstrates a strong alliance focused on logistical excellence." With Hong Kong acting as a “super connector,” the partnership aims to establish more streamlined logistics channels, pushing forward developments in both sea-air and water-to-water transshipment activities, enabling products to flow effectively from the GBA to global markets.
