Hong Kong International Airport: The Global Cargo Leader
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reaffirmed its status as the world’s busiest cargo airport at the TIACA Executive Summit 2025, showcasing its determination to remain at the top amidst challenges in the aviation sector.
A Collaborative Approach to Expansion
The multi-faceted approach involves both the industry and government stakeholders, spearheaded by Cathay Pacific. The airline is gearing up for substantial fleet expansion, with over 100 state-of-the-art aircraft orders, including six new A350 freighters—25% more efficient than previous models, according to Tom Owen, Director of Cargo.
Innovative Infrastructure and Capacity Boosts
Along with its dedicated air cargo terminal, HKIA's new three-runway operation enhances its capacity to an impressive 10 million tons annually, as pointed out by Cissy Chan, executive director at HKIA. This critical infrastructure supports the majority of HKIA’s cargo volume—70% originates from across the Hong Kong-China border.
Strengthening Cross-Border Logistics
Years of investment in upstream logistics infrastructure enable seamless movement of goods from China to Hong Kong, utilizing various transport methods, including road and air. The Hong Kong government aims to enhance this collaboration further, as indicated by Mable Chan, the Secretary for Transport and Logistics.
Embracing Digital Transformation
The push for digital innovation is stronger than ever. Cathay Pacific is focusing on harnessing data, implementing AI to streamline operations and reduce reliance on paper. Owen emphasized the significance of IATA's ONE Record—a single data platform designed to boost security and speed across the supply chain, even as efforts continue to onboard more airlines.
The Future Looks Bright for Hong Kong Airfreight
Support for Hong Kong’s airfreight future isn’t limited to Cathay. Cainiao, Alibaba’s logistics arm, recently introduced an AI solution to assist customers in navigating tariffs—an essential tool amidst current trade tensions. Furthermore, the Hong Kong Cargo Connect digital platform facilitates interline freight transfers, broadening connectivity among airlines.
Optimism Amidst Tariff Challenges
Participants at the summit reflected a cautiously optimistic outlook for the future. While exports to the US saw a decline, local leaders, including Wilson Kwong of Hactl, expressed confidence in recovering throughput to global markets. Accenture has also reported double-digit growth in major trade lanes, signaling a positive trend despite ongoing tariff complexities.
