"In the game, players dictate their pace, but with weekly episodes, we can't keep viewers waiting as long as the game does to understand certain characters,” he stated. Druckmann pointed out the difference between interactive storytelling and a linear narrative: "When you play a character, you immediately connect with them. You don’t need extensive backstory to care about characters like Sarah or Abby when you're living their experiences through gameplay. In the show, we need more drama and backstory to cultivate that connection with the audience."

Casting the Right Abby

Casting Kaitlyn Dever as Abby was another critical decision made by co-creator Craig Mazin, who described the role as complex and layered. Depending on where viewers are in the story, Abby can be portrayed as both sympathetic and detestable, creating a whirlwind of conflicting feelings.

"Dever is that rare talent who can evoke quick and convincing connections with her character, adding to the confusion about who the audience should root for, which is precisely the point,” Mazin noted.
