An exciting new chapter for golf enthusiasts is unfolding in Hong Kong with the commencement of construction at the Plover Cove Golf Club. This ambitious development will feature an impressive 18-hole golf course, meticulously crafted by the renowned design firm Fry/Straka.
The project is set to transform a sprawling 53-hectare landfill site at Shuen Wan into a world-class golfing destination, with an estimated investment of 4.5 billion Hong Kong dollars (approximately US$580 million). This upscale golf club aims not only to elevate recreational opportunities but also to solidify Hong Kong's position as a premier global hub for tourism and leisure activities.
“This groundbreaking project represents a new standard in both golf course design and conditioning, positioning itself among the finest courses in the world,” states Dean Nelson, the general manager of Plover Cove. He emphasizes the importance of this transformation, saying, “Turning this once-overlooked piece of land into a stunning golfing destination underscores our commitment to enhancing Hong Kong's environment and recreational offerings.”
Construction management is overseen by Flagstick Golf Course Construction Management, with expert guidance from the golf consultancy, Turfgrass. The development is employing cutting-edge technology, including advanced drainage and bunker systems, as well as Zoysia grasses and a subsurface moisture management system. These innovations are similar to those used at renowned courses like Augusta National, TPC Sawgrass, and Muirfield Village, ensuring that Plover Cove can maintain exceptional playing surfaces despite the local weather challenges.
One of the standout features of Plover Cove will be its sustainable rainwater harvesting system, complete with a water tank and recirculation mechanism, designed to capture and store rainwater for irrigation purposes. This initiative will significantly reduce the club's dependency on traditional water sources. Additionally, the irrigation system will utilize automated sensors to carefully monitor and control watering schedules, enhancing water efficiency and minimizing wastage—making Plover Cove a leader in environmental stewardship.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, the golf course will also integrate two rare incense trees into its design. These trees are protected under Hong Kong’s ‘Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance’ due to their classification as ‘near threatened.’ Plover Cove is dedicated to minimizing any adverse effects on local wildlife, including species such as the collared crow and the black kite, by setting aside a dedicated 1.2 hectares of land for their protection.
With these remarkable features and developments, Plover Cove Golf Club is poised to become a stunning tribute to design excellence, sustainability, and environmental conservation in the heart of Hong Kong. Golf enthusiasts and nature lovers alike have much to look forward to as this ambitious project progresses!
