MADISON, WIS. – The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basketball team is experiencing a tumultuous season, marked by a disheartening 0-5 record in the Big Ten Conference after a staggering 80-59 defeat against their long-time rivals, the Wisconsin Badgers, on Friday night at the Kohl Center.
In early December, both head coaches, Ben Johnson of the Gophers and Greg Gard of the Badgers, found themselves in similar circumstances regarding their teams' league standings. However, while the Badgers have found their footing with three conference wins, the Gophers remain the only winless squad in the Big Ten, struggling to exhibit competitiveness in what is widely acknowledged as one of the toughest college basketball conferences.
The Gophers managed to keep the game close in the first half, trailing by just one point at 30-29. However, their performance took a nosedive in the second half, as Wisconsin unleashed a relentless 40-12 run, ballooning their lead to as much as 30 points. This marked Minnesota's most significant loss to Wisconsin since a devastating 83-57 defeat back in 2014.
In the aftermath of the game, a somber atmosphere enveloped the locker room, where Johnson allowed his players to lead a discussion reflective of their frustrations about the lack of fight post-halftime. Johnson refrained from negative remarks, emphasizing the need for his players to understand the drastic differences in their performance across the two halves.
“We’ve got to figure out what it takes to be more competitive when it matters,” Johnson stressed, reflecting on their fifth straight loss. In four of their five conference defeats, the Gophers have been outscored by an alarming average of nearly 19 points—brutal losses against powerhouses like Purdue, Michigan State, and Indiana exacerbated the situation.
Star senior forward Dawson Garcia emerged as the lone bright spot for the Gophers, posting 20 points and 10 rebounds. He expressed frustration with the team’s inability to maintain urgency: “There’s got to be a pressure that you’ve got to win. And you got to be able to deal with that pressure. There’s no excuse but to win,” he declared.
The Gophers initially surged to a 15-5 advantage, powered by Garcia's impressive start, but were unable to maintain momentum as turnovers plagued their performance. Wisconsin capitalized ruthlessly, scoring 19 points off 15 turnovers, including pivotal transitions that shifted the game’s momentum.
Looking ahead, Minnesota's path does not get easier. The Gophers will meet the Badgers again on March 5 at Williams Arena; however, they must first face the Maryland Terrapins on the road this Monday. As the season progresses, the pressure mounts for the Gophers to harness their competitive spirit and secure a crucial win to salvage their season.
In a season filled with ups and downs, will the Gophers find their winning rhythm, or could this year slip further into despair? Fans will be eagerly watching as they hope to see significant improvements in the upcoming games.
