Google Meet Takes a Leap into Real-Time Communication
At the I/O 2025 event, Google unveiled a revolutionary update for Meet that introduces real-time speech translation, which feels like having a personal interpreter right in your video call.
While Meet already offers text captions that translate in real-time, this innovative speech translation feature goes a step further by transforming your spoken words into the listener's preferred language—authentically preserving the essence of your voice.
Breaking Language Barriers Like Never Before
Language never has to hinder your connections again! Imagine speaking in Spanish while your listener hears every nuance in English, complete with your distinct tone and emotional inflection. Conversely, you'll comprehend their replies seamlessly in Spanish.
This magical communication occurs in 'near real time,' allowing conversations to flow naturally. Initially, participants will hear the original speech softly before the translation kicks in. However, Google does caution that there could be slight delays during conversations.
Technological Marvel Behind the Feature
Powered by the cutting-edge audio model developed by Google DeepMind, known as AudioLM, this technology relies on extensive audio data to enable direct audio-to-audio transformations, ensuring that the original audio qualities are preserved as much as possible.
How to Access Speech Translation in Google Meet
To activate this feature, users can find the 'Speech Translation with Gemini' panel in the top-right corner of Google Meet on the web. Here, you'll specify both the language you're speaking and the language you wish to hear. Once activated, the video feed will be marked with an eye-catching Gemini glow, confirming that translation is in progress.
Get Ready for the Beta Launch!
Starting today, consumers can participate in the beta rollout of Speech Translation as part of Google’s new AI Pro and Ultra plans. With only one participant needing a subscription, this feature is already set to support English and Spanish, with plans for Italian, German, and Portuguese to follow shortly.
Businesses, stay tuned! Google intends to expand this groundbreaking technology to Workspace customers later this year, paving the way for effortless cross-language collaboration in professional settings.
