At this year's CinemaCon, Glen Powell and director Edgar Wright took the stage to captivate audiences with a tantalizing preview of their upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel, *The Running Man*. The event, hosted by Paramount Pictures, brought together a star-studded lineup, including co-stars Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo.
Set in a grim future ruled by media manipulation and government control, *The Running Man* follows the harrowing journey of Ben Richards, played by Powell. In a desperate bid to save his ailing child and escape their dire circumstances, he volunteers to participate in a brutal game show where he will be hunted by professional killers for a grueling 30 days. With chilling stakes on the line, Richards must navigate a deadly maze while evading capture.
Fresh off filming, Edgar Wright shared his excitement: "We literally just finished shooting less than a week ago." This energy was palpable as Powell added, "Perhaps I got what I asked for when I sought stunt advice from Tom Cruise... I’ve never worked harder on a movie in my life."
The clip introduced by Domingo gave a stark look at the dystopian setting, showcasing a future resembling a decrepit metropolis. Interestingly, Wright pointed out that Stephen King, writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, originally set the narrative in 2025. The trailer kicks off with a desperate interaction between Brolin’s character and Powell’s Richards, as the executive persuades him to join the most dangerous reality show imaginable. "You’re a fighter, Richards," he insists.
What sets this adaptation apart from the beloved 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is its emphasis on realism. In this modern reimagining, Richards finds himself on the run within a rundown apartment complex, fending off attacks and dodging grenades, all while the flamboyant emcee (Domingo) heightens the tension with exuberant proclamations: "The thrill of the hunt! Can you feel it?! This is America, goddamn it, and we don’t put up with no bullshit!"
As the footage closes, Powell shouts defiantly, "I’m still here, you shiteaters!" drawing enthusiastic reactions from the audience.
Previously unveiled at last year’s CinemaCon, Powell's casting has generated significant buzz among fans. The impressive ensemble cast also features William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, and Jayme Lawson, setting high expectations for this cinematic venture.
Scheduled for a domestic release on November 7, the film promises to blend Wright’s unique storytelling style with King’s chilling narrative, thanks to producers Simon Kinberg, Nira Park, and Wright himself. Get ready for a wild ride—this is one film you won’t want to miss!
