In a surprising move, the New York Giants have cut ties with beloved fourth-string quarterback Tommy DeVito. The decision comes just ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. roster deadline.
The Giants are opting to move forward with a trio of quarterbacks: Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, and Jameis Winston, leaving DeVito’s future uncertain.
Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, a staunch advocate for DeVito, shared his thoughts before the cut. "There’s plenty of tape out there that shows he can play in this league," Robinson expressed, noting DeVito's impressive growth since joining the team. "I remember when he first arrived—he was so quiet and seemed lost in the offense. Now, he’s developed significantly.”
DeVito, hailing from Livingston, made his mark as an undrafted free agent in 2023 after previously showcasing his skills at Don Bosco Prep. Initially relegated to the practice squad, he has since appeared in 12 games over the last two seasons, boasting completion stats of 65.3% with 1,358 passing yards, complemented by eight touchdowns and three interceptions, earning a 3-5 record.
Historically, NFL teams rarely keep four quarterbacks on their active roster, meaning DeVito has the potential to join the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
Giants reporter Jordan Raanan emphasized on social media that DeVito will have options ahead. Robinson chimed in, praising DeVito’s familiarity with the offense and expressing optimism for his future opportunities. “He’s the most seasoned player in that quarterback room and has matured tremendously. I'm thrilled for Tommy and hope the best is yet to come for him.”
As fans reflect on the departure of 'Tommy Cutlets,' one thing is certain: this is not the end of DeVito's journey in the NFL.
