Georgian Wine Takes Center Stage in Hong Kong

In an exciting development for wine enthusiasts in Hong Kong, City’super, the renowned lifestyle specialty store, has initiated its very first Georgian wine promotion, which began on September 19 and will run across six selected locations in the city until October 15, 2024.

Kicking off the Promotion

Kicking off this landmark event was a media and trade tasting held at City’super’s Southside store, featuring the esteemed Master of Wine, Debra Meiburg. Meiburg, who founded the Georgian Wine Ambassador education program for Asia, led the tasting to showcase the unique and rich heritage of Georgian winemaking.

Spotlight on Qvevri Wines

At the event, the spotlight was on qvevri wines, a hallmark of the ancient winemaking traditions from Georgia. Guests had the opportunity to view a traditional egg-shaped clay vessel, used in qvevri winemaking and typically buried underground. This striking display offered a tangible glimpse into the 8,000-year-old winemaking history of the country.

Diverse Wine Selection

The promotion features over 10 different wines, with a special emphasis on amber wine, sometimes referred to as orange wine, which is made from white grapes fermented with their skins—a distinctive approach that sets Georgian wines apart. In addition to amber wines, a variety of red, white, and rosé wines are included, appealing to a broad spectrum of palates.

Debra Meiburg's Insights

Debra Meiburg expressed her belief that amber wines deserve greater recognition, stating, "We should be making white wine with grape skins; this is the missing piece of the puzzle." She also highlighted how these wines are gaining traction among younger drinkers in Asia, describing their characteristics as "exciting" and “vigorous,” with a texture that captivates the palate.

Pairing with Asian Cuisine

Moreover, she noted the exceptional pairing potential with Asian dishes, particularly highlighting their compatibility with everyday meats like pork and chicken—staples in the local cuisine.

City’super's Goals

City’super’s senior wine buyer, Yvonne Wang, emphasized the promotion's role in introducing Georgian wines to new consumers. She articulated a goal of elevating these historically rich wines within the bustling retail environment, offering a platform for a diverse clientele ranging from novices to experienced wine enthusiasts.

New Entrants in the Market

Notably, this promotion marks the debut of two Georgian wineries in the Hong Kong market: Pi and Baia. One standout wine from Pi Winery, Akura, is available in limited quantities with only 600 bottles produced, retailing at HKD 270.

Tastings and Discounts

In addition to tastings available every weekend throughout the promotion period, customers can also take advantage of volume discounts: a 5% discount on three bottles, 10% off six bottles, and a generous 15% discount on purchases of 12 or more bottles.
