In a heartfelt move that solidifies the Turner legacy in the NFL, the Las Vegas Raiders have turned to family by bringing in Norv Turner to help guide his son, Scott Turner, the team’s new interim offensive coordinator. This transition comes after the release of former offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
The Turners are no strangers to collaboration in football; they’ve teamed up at various franchises before, including stints in Cleveland, Minnesota, and Carolina. However, this time, the dynamic has shifted as Scott was elevated to the role of play-caller by head coach Antonio Pierce.
During a press conference, Scott expressed, “The only thing I really asked for was if we could have my dad come just for some help, and he was good about that.” He elaborated that Pierce respects the family connection, having faced Norv as a player during his coaching days. Scott appreciates having his father’s perspective in the mix as they navigate the remainder of the season.
Despite not having called plays since 2019, Norv, who had an illustrious coaching career spanning nearly three decades, remains deeply connected to football. Scott noted that the Raiders are at a point where significant changes to the offensive strategy may not be feasible, but he is confident in Norv’s ability to provide valuable insights.
“He has such a wealth of knowledge,” said Scott, reflecting on his father's extensive experience. “He called offensive plays from 1991 to 2019, missing only one year! With top offenses in three different decades, having him around gives us an additional set of eyes on the field.”
Beyond the professional advantages, the personal joys are equally significant. Scott highlighted that his children are thrilled to have their grandfather nearby, creating a warm family atmosphere within the team’s structure. “My kids are fired up to have Papa around,” he shared, revealing how much they cherish this opportunity.
Interestingly, despite his service in the NFL, Norv had reservations about returning to coaching, humorously hinting at the challenge of breaking the news to his wife. “He said, ‘Don’t tell your mom,’ as he figured out how to share the news,” Scott laughed. “But she responded positively, and now everyone is excited about it.”
Norv Turner, who previously had a challenging tenure as Raiders head coach from 2004 to 2005, with a record of 9-23, is now back in the Raiders' fold. With his wealth of experience and family support, the Turners aim to rekindle the offensive spark for their team as they approach the latter part of the season.
