In a bold move to rejuvenate its tourism sector, the Chinese government announced this week an extension of the visa-free stay for foreign tourists to a remarkable ten days. This initiative is part of China's broader strategy to draw back travelers following a sharp decline due to pandemic restrictions and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Starting in 2023, tourists from 54 countries, including the United States, have been able to visit China without a visa, provided they are merely in transit to another destination. Previously, visitors were limited to stays of three to six days, depending on their port of entry. With the new policy, travelers can now enjoy up to 240 hours or ten days of exploration within China if they arrive at designated airports.

More Changes to Facilitate Travel

In addition to the extended stay, China has expanded its list of ports of entry, adding 21 new locations to the previously established 39. This change aims to remove barriers that once confined visitors to the inbound region, allowing for movement across 24 provinces where visa-free travel is permitted.

How to Take Advantage of This Program

To benefit from this new transit policy, tourists must arrange at least two flights: one to one of the 60 approved Chinese ports of entry and another to a third country within ten days of arrival in China. Upon arrival, passengers will need to present proof of an onward flight and complete a brief application process at the airport. Travelers must also go through standard security checks and answer immigration questions, so travelers should prepare accordingly.

Scott Keyes, founder of the travel app Going, notes that while the program may have had limited impact on American tourism thus far, it represents a significant opportunity to lure more visitors to the country. China is facing unique challenges, as demand for flights to its cities lag behind other popular destinations like Western Europe and the Caribbean, primarily due to high ticket prices and the tense U.S.-China relations.

Despite these hurdles, recent statistics reveal that over 14 million foreign visitors entered China in the first half of 2024, with many utilizing visa-free programs. This influx marks a positive sign after years of strict travel measures.
