Film enthusiasts in Singapore are in for a treat as the much-anticipated Hong Kong Film Gala makes its way to the city from November 20 to 24 at GV Suntec City. This grand presentation is organized by the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA) in partnership with the Singapore Film Society (SFS), and with backing from the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), the Film Development Fund (FDF), and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Singapore.

This exciting program aims to introduce audiences to the vibrant and innovative world of contemporary Hong Kong cinema. After successful showcases in multiple countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Dubai, Singapore will serve as the grand finale of this remarkable cinematic journey.

The gala will feature eight Hong Kong films, kicking off with the Singapore premiere of The Last Dance, a captivating story directed, produced, and written by Anselm Chan. This film stars comedy legends Michael Hui and Dayo Wong, alongside a diverse supporting cast including Michelle Wai and Catherine Chau. The Last Dance tackles the rarely discussed Hong Kong funeral industry through the eyes of a wedding planner turned funeral planner during the pandemic, intricately weaving themes of life, death, and personal connections. Anselm Chan expressed his excitement: "It's an honor that The Last Dance has been chosen to open the Hong Kong Film Gala in Singapore. It holds a special place for us, and I am eager to share our thoughts and experiences with the audience."

Audiences can also look forward to the uproarious detective comedy YUM Investigation, helmed by director Dickson Leung. The film showcases four young sleuths with superpowers tackling paranormal mysteries with humor. Leung will engage with fans during the post-screening discussion, sharing insights into his creative process.

Moreover, the thrilling directorial debut Stuntman by Albert Leung and Herbert Leung encapsulates the fierce dedication and struggles of Hong Kong stunt actors. This film features legendary action choreographer Tung Wai and martial arts star Philip Ng. With electrifying action sequences that pay homage to Hong Kong's storied action film legacy, Stuntman promises to leave audiences on the edge of their seats. Both Herbert Leung and screenwriter Anastasia Tsang will join the post-screening Q&A to delve into the depths of their filmmaking journey.

As part of the gala, a variety of other films will be screened, including Remember What I Forgot by Keian Chui, a nostalgic tribute to Hong Kong cinema, and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, directed by Soi Cheang, which is vying for a nomination for the Best Foreign Film at the 2025 Academy Awards. Notably, it will be shown in Cantonese for the first time in Singapore alongside previously unseen footage.

In an effort to enhance audience engagement, the gala will also feature a university talk on November 21 at LASALLE College of the Arts, titled “Contemporary Directing and Screenwriting in HK Cinema: Aspirations, Challenges, and Opportunities”. Here, directors Anselm Chan, Dickson Leung, and screenwriter Anastasia Tsang will discuss the evolving landscape of film storytelling in Hong Kong.

In addition to the screenings and discussions, a promotional booth will be available at the Suntec City East Atrium from November 15 to 24. Visitors will have the chance to win exclusive souvenirs and tickets to the opening film while exploring captivating posters of recent Hong Kong film releases.
