Introducing Core Devices and a New Era of Smartwatches

In an exciting new chapter for smartwatch enthusiasts, Eric Migicovsky, the visionary behind Pebble, has launched Core Devices alongside revealing innovative smartwatches powered by the newly open-sourced PebbleOS. In his debut podcast episode, "Tick Talk w/ Eric Migicovsky," he showcases the upcoming Core 2 Duo—currently a work-in-progress.

A Sneak Peek at the Core 2 Duo

Migicovsky is optimistic that the Core 2 Duo—featuring a budget-friendly black-and-white display without touch capabilities—will hit the market by July 2025. His demonstration included one of the pioneering units from production, though it's clear the software still needs refinement. While the iconic PebbleOS interface is making a comeback, essential features like time-telling are yet to be activated, as the team continues perfecting functionality including vibrating notifications and the smartwatch's accelerometer.

Design Features That Catch the Eye

The Core 2 Duo's design includes a comfortable silicone strap reminiscent of the Apple Watch, complete with a practical slot for excess strap length. Additionally, Migicovsky revealed a compact USB-C magnetic charging dongle, enhancing ease of use.

Exciting New Features on the Horizon

Reflecting on the successes of the original Pebble era, Migicovsky teased a range of new features for the Core 2 Duo and its sibling, the Core Time 2, slated for release in December 2025. The Core Time 2 will boast a vibrant color touchscreen, promising a user-friendly experience.

One standout feature will be watch face widgets, allowing users quick access to critical information such as weather updates and appointments. Moreover, Migicovsky is keen on deepening the integration of Beeper, a universal chat application he created after Pebble's acquisition by Google, to bolster the smartwatches’ communication capabilities.

Enhanced AI and iOS Compatibility

With built-in speakers and microphones, the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 will also venture into AI voice functionality. Thanks to the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Migicovsky envisions expanded compatibility with iOS, potentially enabling voice responses to messages through an iPhone—aimed primarily at the European market.

Future Expansion of PebbleOS

The Core Devices team is hard at work overhauling PebbleOS's architecture and adapting it for new Bluetooth chipsets. This innovation will expand its potential applications beyond wearables, although the specifics of these new device types remain under wraps.

Navigating Tariffs and Pricing Concerns

During the podcast, Migicovsky candidly discussed the implications of President Trump’s tariffs on China-manufactured goods. Currently, Chinese smartwatches face a hefty 27.5% tariff, which could drive the prices of the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 upward by $10 to $25. As for their final pricing, the anticipated costs stand at $149 for the Core 2 Duo and $225 for the Core Time 2, but the exact impact of tariffs remains uncertain.
