Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is once again making headlines for his controversial remarks, this time targeting Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
On Tuesday, Musk's tirade against European political figures continued with an inflammatory post on X (formerly known as Twitter), where he labeled the German president an "anti-democratic tyrant" and expressed his disdain with a bold "Shame on him."
The context for Musk's fiery comments stems from Steinmeier's recent speech concerning foreign influence amid the unsolved dissolution of the Bundestag — Germany’s federal parliament.
This speech drew criticism from various sources, including Naomi Seibt, an influencer linked with the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD). Musk's tweet appeared as a direct response to these criticisms, amplifying the conversation around foreign meddling in German politics.
This isn't the first time Musk has waded into European political waters.
Just a few months ago, he commented on Chancellor Olaf Scholz, branding him a "fool" in a post written in German. Following this, Musk even speculated that Scholz would flounder in the upcoming federal elections in February, albeit with a misspelling of his name. Musk's engagement with German politicians showcases his penchant for stirring the pot, especially given that he has amassed an impressive following of over 200 million users on X.
In a twist that further fuels the controversy, a spokesperson for AfD leader Alice Weidel revealed plans for an online meeting between Weidel and Musk.
This prospect follows Musk's own suggestion for an X Spaces conversation, hinting at possible strategic alliances within the far-right movement in Germany.
Germany's political landscape is reacting strongly to Musk's interventions.
Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck did not hold back in criticizing Musk's attempts to sway German elections, accusing him of using his wealth to threaten European stability. "Elon Musk is equipped with billions and unbridled communication power," Habeck stated on X. "His call for the AfD is systematic; he wants to weaken Europe. Power must be limited: no business model must destroy our democracy."
As if the situation couldn't intensify further, concerns are also mounting in the UK as Musk courts attention from British conservatives.
Aligning himself with figures like hard-right leader Nigel Farage, he has launched an onslaught of critiques directed at the UK’s Labour government and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, further amplifying fears of Musk's influence on political processes beyond Germany.
With a growing consensus on the potential repercussions of Musk’s digital diplomacy, the question looms: how will these provocations shape the political landscape across Europe?
The countdown to Germany's elections is on, and with Musk in the mix, anything could happen!
