Fans were ecstatic when Bethesda announced the remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion earlier this year, but excitement has quickly fizzled out.

Unfortunately, Oblivion Remastered is suffering from a host of bugs and crashes, especially after its 1.2 update. This has led to its Recent Reviews on Steam plummeting to a troubling 'Mixed' status. Players have reported frustrating performance issues, inexplicable crashes, problematic difficulty scaling, and concerns over Unreal Engine 5.

One irritated player lamented, "I stopped counting the crashes", particularly when trying to sleep or skip time in the game. Another user expressed their desire to recommend the game but felt compelled to hold back due to technical difficulties. They also noted a lack of timely patches, stating that the recent update did little to rectify the situation.

Others have echoed these frustrations, with one reviewer reminiscing about their initial experience at launch with mods when everything was running smoothly—only to return to a game plagued by a "GPU crash dump" error.

Performance complaints are rampant among Steam users, especially as the remaster showcases the dreaded stuttering issues prevalent in other Unreal Engine 5 titles. Interestingly, some players noted that many of the bugs are not new; they have been inherited from the original 2006 version. One reviewer commented, "I was shocked to find issues that I looked up online for a workaround, only to discover they were identical to the bugs from the original game."

For many, including myself, the fluctuating framerate and stuttering problems have drastically reduced the enjoyment of this visually stunning remake. It's a real letdown for an eagerly anticipated revival of a beloved classic.
