Hong Kong Tourists Avoid Earthquake-Prone Destinations This Easter

As fears of seismic activity loom large, many Hong Kong residents are steering clear of popular Asian tourist spots this Easter season. Despite a notable drop in tour prices—down by as much as 15% compared to last year—travel interest has waned, according to EGL Tours, one of Hong Kong's leading travel agencies.

Prices Drop, But Concern Prevails

Steve Huen Kwok-chuen, executive director of EGL Tours, shared insights during a recent radio segment, indicating that declining prices are due to a stronger Hong Kong dollar, reduced flight costs, and an increase in airline capacity. A six-day trip to Japan now costs between HK$10,000 and HK$13,000, a significant dip from last year's rates of HK$10,000 to HK$16,000.

Are Earthquakes Affecting Travel Choices?

When asked about the impact of recent earthquakes on travel plans, Huen noted only a slight drop in bookings compared to last Easter. "The effect is there—people are thinking about the quakes—but it’s not substantial," he remarked.

Recent Earthquakes Shake Region

The region has indeed faced trembling ground lately, with a 5.6-magnitude quake striking near Meiktila, Myanmar, just this past Sunday. Fortunately, early reports indicate no major damage or casualties. However, a more severe 7.7-magnitude quake on March 28 devastated parts of Myanmar, contributing to over 3,500 fatalities.

Japan Braces for Future Quakes

Adding to the trepidation, Japanese authorities have sounded the alarm over the possibility of a megaquake off its Pacific coast, estimating an 80% likelihood of an 8.0-magnitude quake occurring within the next 30 years, which could have catastrophic consequences.

Travel Trends Shift to Safer Destinations

Contrary to long-haul travel, Fanny Yeung Shuk-fun, Executive Director of the Travel Industry Council, noted a slight decline in air tour group bookings, with many opting for North Asian destinations or short trips instead. High-speed rail connections to mainland cities are also becoming increasingly popular.

High-Speed Rail Gains Momentum!

More than half of the tour groups this Easter are expected to take advantage of Hong Kong's high-speed rail, which connects to over 100 destinations straight from West Kowloon Station. Yeung mentioned that some agencies are even reserving entire high-speed trains, accommodating over 600 passengers—a sign of growing demand.

Hong Kong’s Travel Influence Remains Strong

Despite these challenges, Hong Kong remains one of the largest sources of tourists to Japan, with approximately 2.7 million visits recorded last year, placing it fifth among international visitors. This trend, however, may shift as safety concerns continue to shape travel decisions.
